
First mentioned in historical documents in 1655, when Cossacks
and their families have settled in the area, the city is located
at the confluence of the Kharkiv, Lopan and Ude rivers. In
the late 17th century Kharkiv was one of the largest commercial
centers of Ukraine. From December 1919 to June 1934 it was
the capital of the Soviet Ukraine. The Ukrainian cultural
renaissance commenced here in the years of 1920-30. M. Khvylovy
and L. Kurbas lived and worked in Kharkiv and established
the VAPLITE writers’ organization and the Berezil Theatre.
The first wave of repressions of the Ukrainian intelligentsia
began in Kharkiv.
Six museums work in Kharkiv among them the Historical, the
Art and Nature Science Museums.
