The history of Kyiv dates back to the 5th century A. D. In
the 9th –12th centuries Kyiv became a capital of mighty medieval
state – Kyivan Rus. After the Tatar invasion (1240), which
badly ruined the city, Kyiv got under control of alien powers
– Tatars, Lithuanians, Poles, Russians, remaining at the same
time Ukrainian cultural, spiritual and educational center.
In 1991 Kyiv became the capital of independent Ukraine.
Kyiv is located on the both banks of the Dnipro River. 42
% of the city area have been built up. The rest of the territory
is reservoirs as well as forests, parks and other green plantations.

this is one of the best indicators in the world. Originality
and diversity of natural conditions of Kyiv are associated
with its situation in the partially – wooden steppe bordering
upon the mixed forest zone.
