The regional center is situated on the Seret River, its oldest
structure dating back to 1540. The city was devastated during
several wars, but the largest damage was caused in World War
II. Although Ternopil has been then completely reconstructed,
some of the relics include the “Old Castle”, which contains
the nucleus of the 16th century defensive castle. It has been
rebuilt in the 19th century and renovated in 1954. The Nativity
of Christ Church (the 16th century), Church of the Dominicans
(the 18th century) and others attract interest of travelers.
The famous literary anthology “Rusalka Dnistrova” was compiled
in Ternopil by
M. Shashkevych, I. Vahylevych and Y. Holovatsky. This book,
published in Budapest in 1837, signaled the beginning of modern
Ukrainian literature in the Western Ukrainian lands.
Among the Ternopil tourist highlights two museums will attract
your attention: the Museum of History and Ethnography and the
Arts Museum.
Ternopil serves well as a base for exploring the region’s many
historic sites: Berezhany Castle (the 16th century), Chortkiv
Castle (the 17th century), Buchach Castle (the 14th century),
Pochayiv Cave Monastery and Zboriv. |
