
City - resort situated 79 km south of Simferopol.
Population – 150.000 inhabitants.
The name “Yalta” (in Arabic “Jalita”) was first mentioned in
the works of Arab geographer and traveler Al-Idricy in 1154.
Yalta was a little shore village by a snug sea harbor. In 1833
the Yalta port was founded and in 1838 Yalta was granted the
status of a town. In the second half of 19th century Yalta became
a fashionable climatic resort with the residence of the Russian
Tsar, luxurious aristocratic palaces, hotels and boarding houses.
This port on the Black Sea has become well known since February
1945, when the Allied leaders Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin
met to plan the termination of World War II. The main street
of Yalta, which runs through the old city quarter, is named
Roosevelt Avenue to commemorate this historical event.
Yalta and its close vicinities offer a lot of sightseeing
attractions. Among the most popular ones there is Livadiya
Palace – the former summer residence of the Russian Tsars
and the place of the famous Yalta conference in February 1945.
Another highlight is the Swallow`s Nest – a castle on the
cliff, that has become architectural symbol of Crimea. Literature
lovers will appreciate exhibition of Chekhov museum, which
is located in the house where the renown writer used to write
and create. Considered the Ukrainian Riviera, Yalta has a
wonderful Mediterranean climate and is set in the midst of
1200m mountains. Nikita Botanical Garden (1812) boasts a great
popularity among tourists. It has 28,000 types and species
of plants and takes up an area of about 1000 ha. The Garden
has a large collection of roses – over 2000 varieties.
A visit to Massandra Palace with wine-tasting is another
exciting travel option just outside Yalta. Dating back to
the second half of 19th century it is one of the most beautiful
architectural landmarks in Crimea. The Massandra wine collection
contains about million bottles of famous wines.
Together with neighboring villages Yalta is the largest international
resort in Crimea. It has more than 150 therapeutic resort
establishments, plenty of good hotels, beautiful nature surroundings
and lots of places of interest. In addition Yalta is a perfect
starting point to discover attractions of the whole Crimea.
The present-day Yalta is the most popular tourist resort
and health center in Ukraine. It is also a national cultural
center and is known for its great international festivals,
such as the Fireworks Festival, the international Folklore
Festival, International Pushkin and Chekhov Days.
Yalta is considered to be the most exotic site in Ukraine.
