
Founded in 1770 on the left bank of the Dnipro River as a
citadel against Tatars and Turks, the “city beyond the rapids”
is closely associated with the history of the Cossack warriors
whose independent 16-18th century state was headquartered
at the nearby Khortytsya Island.
Today it is the largest industrial complex of Ukraine.
KHORTYTSIA ISLAND
With the rise of Cossacks movement, Khortytsya became the
base of the Zaporizhzhyan Cossacks and important as a center
of Ukrainian statehood. Visit the Cossacks Museum, see burial
mounds and kurhans.
